About this task

Unisphere for PowerMax provides a capacity dashboard which displays the state of their system in terms of resource and capacity usage from a usable and logical perspective. It displays usage against predefined thresholds and displays how these values have changed over time. The dashboard includes time correlated charts to show the impact of Data Reduction Ratio (DRR) on usable storage.

See Understanding resource usage for an overview of resource usage.

To view the Capacity dashboard view for a storage system running HYPERMAX OS 5977 or PowerMaxOS 5978 see View capacity dashboard for a specific storage system (HYPERMAX OS 5977 or PowerMaxOS 5978). To view the Capacity dashboard view for a storage system running PowerMaxOS 10 (6079), see the following steps:

Steps

  1. Select a storage system running PowerMaxOS 10 (6079).
The system health dashboard is displayed by default. You can hover over CAPACITY to view the capacity summary for the storage system.
  2. Click CAPACITY, select the system or an SRP instance and view the following items:
    • A graphical representation of the effective capacity of the storage system or SRP instance
    • A graphical representation of data reduction for the storage system or SRP instance
    • A graphical representation of provisioned, effective, and snapshot capacity for the storage system or SRP instance
    • Information about the data reduction ratio and reducing data

In the Effective Capacity chart, the X-axis displays the timeframe that can be changed by selecting the 1-month button, 3-month button, or 6-month button. The Y-axis displays the capacity in TB. The Effective Used capacity (indicated in blue color) and the Total Effective Capacity (indicated in gray color) are graphed on the chart. Clicking the Effective Capacity chart updates the horizontal bar charts on the right of the dashboard to show how the values change over time. You can see how historical changes to DRR and Effective Used capacity can impact capacity and how DRR changes can impact the maximum effective capacity. You can also see how the amount provisioned changes over time. You can view a greater level of detail by clicking the horizontal bar charts on the right of the dashboard. The chart can be reset to the current date by pressing the Reset button that appears when a historical data point has been selected from the chart. Arrows (indicating drill downs are possible) are not displayed when a historic time is selected on the Effective Capacity chart and the Reset button is visible.

In the Data Reduction chart, the X-axis displays the timeframe that can be changed by selecting the 1-month button, 3-month button, or 6-month button. The Y-axis displays DRR. The DRR for data that is both enabled for Data Reduction and is being reduced, is graphed on the chart (indicated in blue color). The sized DRR for the SRP emulation is displayed as a dotted line. Clicking the Data Reduction Chart updates the horizontal bar charts on the right of the dashboard to show how the values change over time. Arrows (indicating drill downs are possible) are not displayed when a historic time is selected on the Data Reduction chart and the Reset button is visible.

There are several bar charts on the right-hand side of the screen:

    • The Provisioned bar chart provides a graphical representation of the provisioned capacity. Hovering over the bar chart results in the display of provisioned capacity (total size of TDEVS in TB; does not include system devices) , effective capacity (in TB), and threshold (current threshold for alerting on provisioned percentage. The provisioned percentage is calculated by dividing the provisioned capacity by the effective capacity for the SRP). You can examine it to a greater level of detail by clicking the bar chart (see View provisioned capacity details). Arrows (indicating drill downs are possible) are not displayed when a point in time is selected on the bar chart.
    • The Effective Capacity bar chart provides a graphical representation of the effective capacity. Hovering over the bar chart results in the display of Used (used effective capacity), Free (remaining free capacity), Total (total capacity - used plus free), and Threshold (threshold for alerting on SRP effective used capacity). You can view a greater level of detail by clicking the bar chart (see View effective capacity details). Arrows (indicating drill downs are possible) are not displayed when a point in time is selected on the bar chart.
    • Snapshot (System view) - a bar chart provides a graphical representation of the snapshot capacity. Hovering over the bar chart results in the display of Used (SRP used effective capacity for snapshot change data), Total (System Snapshot Resources Capacity), Free (total - used), and threshold (threshold for alerting on snapshot changed data). You can view a greater level of detail by clicking the bar chart (see View snapshot capacity details). Arrows (indicating drill downs are possible) are not displayed when a point in time is selected on the bar chart.
    • Snapshot (SRP view) - In the multi-SRP scenario, a bar chart is not displayed for the snapshot. Instead the TB amount specific to the selected SRP is displayed. To see the total SRP system snapshot usage, you must analyze the next level.

The right-hand side of the screen also has information about the data reduction ratio (DRR) and reducing data. The DRR is for data that is enabled for data reduction and is reducible. Reducing data is the percentage of capacity on the system that is enabled for data reduction and is being reduced. You can view a greater level of detail by clicking either of the values (see View data reduction details). Arrows (indicating drill downs are possible) are not displayed when a point in time is selected on the bar chart.
